From Police Constable To Flying Officer: The Inspiring Journey of Gursimran Singh

Many people stop dreaming once they secure a stable job.

A regular salary arrives every month, responsibilities increase, and gradually the dreams that once kept them awake begin to fade away.

But some people refuse to let their dreams die.

Gursimran Singh is one of them.

While serving as a Police Constable, completing his graduation, managing demanding duties, and facing repeated failures, he continued chasing a childhood dream. Today, that persistence has earned him selection as a Flying Officer in the Indian Air Force.

His story is not just about clearing an exam. It is about discipline, consistency, self-belief, and the courage to keep moving forward even when success seems distant.

A Dream That Started In Childhood

Gursimran Singh was born and raised in Ropar, Punjab. Like many children, he was fascinated by uniforms and the people who wore them.

During his school years, he often watched commandos training from helicopters and performing rope operations. The sight left a deep impression on him.

What started as childhood admiration slowly turned into a dream.

As he grew older, he attempted the NDA examination multiple times. Despite his efforts, he couldn’t achieve success. For many people, this would have been the end of the journey.

For Gursimran, it was only the beginning.

Choosing Progress Instead of Giving Up

In 2022, he joined the Punjab Police as a Constable.

Many would consider a government job a final destination. But he viewed it differently.

Instead of becoming comfortable, he continued preparing for his future goals.

At the time of joining the police force, he had only completed Class 12. While performing his duties, he also completed his Bachelor of Arts degree and continued preparing for competitive examinations like AFCAT and CDS.

His dream remained alive because he never stopped working toward it.

Studying Wherever Time Allowed

One of the most remarkable aspects of his journey was his approach to time management.

Police duties are demanding and unpredictable. Yet he found ways to study whenever opportunities appeared.

He shared how he would listen to lectures through earphones while standing on duty. Sometimes he studied under a tree’s shade. At other times, he revised under street lights.

Instead of complaining about a lack of time, he learned how to use the time he had.

This mindset teaches an important lesson:

You don’t need perfect conditions to move forward. You only need the willingness to use whatever opportunities are available.

The Power of Consistency

When asked about the most important factor behind his success, his answer was simple:

“Consistency.”

Not talent.

Not luck.

Not intelligence.

Consistency.

He emphasized that success came from showing up every day, even when he felt tired, busy, or discouraged.

Many people work hard occasionally.

Few people work hard consistently.

That difference often determines the final outcome.

Learning Through Failure

Success did not arrive quickly.

Gursimran faced several setbacks throughout his journey.

He attempted NDA examinations without success.

He faced difficulties during graduation and even had supplementary exams to clear.

He appeared for CDS multiple times and managed to clear only on one attempt.

Yet every failure became a lesson rather than a reason to quit.

Perhaps the most inspiring part of his story is that his successful attempt came during his final available opportunity.

He kept going until there were no attempts left to waste.

And that persistence changed his life.

The Importance of Good Friends

Gursimran repeatedly highlighted the importance of surrounding yourself with the right people.

Along with a group of like-minded friends, he formed a study group called “Super Five.”

The group met daily, often through Google Meet, to discuss interview questions, preparation strategies, and personal development.

Even though everyone lived in different places and had separate responsibilities, they stayed committed to helping one another grow.

The lesson is clear:

Your environment influences your future.

When your friends are focused on growth, discipline, and meaningful goals, success becomes easier to pursue.

Finding The Right Mentor

Coming from a simple family background, Gursimran had no direct exposure to the defence services.

His father worked as a driver, and his mother worked as a tailor.

To bridge this gap, he actively sought guidance from mentors and officers who understood the selection process.

One piece of advice stayed with him throughout his preparation:

Choose one reliable mentor and trust the process.

He warned against consuming endless advice from social media and multiple sources, explaining that too much information often creates confusion rather than clarity.

A focused path is usually better than a crowded one.

What SSB Really Looks For

Many candidates believe that interviews are about giving perfect answers.

Gursimran learned something different.

During his SSB preparation, he realized that the assessors are not searching for a fake personality. They are trying to understand the real person sitting in front of them.

His mentor gave him a powerful piece of advice:

“Don’t try to write like an officer. Write like yourself.”

This lesson influenced his entire approach.

Instead of pretending to be someone else, he focused on presenting his authentic self.

In the end, authenticity became one of his greatest strengths.

The Value of Discipline

Another lesson he learned was the importance of daily discipline.

He developed a habit of planning the next day in advance.

Before sleeping, he would decide what needed to be accomplished the following day.

This simple practice reduced confusion and helped him stay focused.

Discipline is often misunderstood as something strict or restrictive.

In reality, discipline creates freedom by helping people move steadily toward their goals.

Family and Relationships Matter

An interesting insight from his preparation was the importance of relationships.

According to him, selection boards observe more than academic achievements.

They look at:

  • Family involvement
  • Relationships with friends
  • Social behavior
  • Community participation

He emphasized helping family members, staying connected to loved ones, and being responsible in daily life.

Leadership starts long before a person receives a title.

It begins in everyday actions.

Having A Plan B

One interview question frequently appeared during his selection process:

“What will you do if you are not selected?”

His answer was practical and honest.

He explained that he would continue serving in his current job and pursue promotional opportunities.

The interviewers appreciated this response because it demonstrated maturity.

Plan B does not weaken your dream.

It strengthens your confidence.

People who have alternatives are often calmer, more adaptable, and more resilient.

The Lesson We Can All Learn

Gursimran Singh’s story is not only for students preparing for defence examinations.

It is for anyone who feels stuck between responsibilities and dreams.

He teaches us that success is not reserved for people with perfect circumstances.

It belongs to those who remain consistent despite imperfect circumstances.

He studied while performing demanding duties.

He completed his graduation while working.

He faced repeated failures.

He continued anyway.

And eventually, the dream that started with watching commandos from a distance became reality.

Final Thoughts

The journey from Police Constable to Flying Officer is not simply a career transition.

It is proof that determination can overcome limitations.

Gursimran Singh’s success reminds us that dreams do not disappear because life becomes busy. They disappear only when we stop pursuing them.

Stay consistent.

Keep learning.

Choose your company wisely.

Trust the process.

And most importantly, never stop believing that your next attempt could be the one that changes everything.
