How Sachin Dutt Secured Air 56 In Ifs While Working A Full-Time Job

Success in competitive examinations is often built on discipline, persistence, and a clear sense of purpose. A remarkable example of this is Sachin Dutt from Bathinda, Punjab, who secured All India Rank 56 in the Indian Forest Service (IFS) Examination.

In a special conversation with journalist and author Tota Singh Dina, Sachin shared valuable insights into his journey, preparation strategy, and the lessons he learned along the way.

From Nangal To The Indian Forest Service

Sachin Dutt was born and raised in Nangal, Punjab. After completing his schooling, he cleared the JEE examination and pursued engineering at Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh.

His interest in the Indian Forest Service developed after interacting with Forest Service officers and learning about their work. The opportunity to contribute to environmental conservation inspired him to pursue this challenging career path.

Understanding The Indian Forest Service Examination

Many students confuse the Indian Forest Service (IFS) with the Indian Foreign Service due to the same abbreviation.

Sachin explained that the Indian Forest Service is an All India Service, similar to IAS and IPS. The examination is conducted by UPSC and follows three stages:

  • Preliminary Examination
  • Main Examination
  • Interview

Unlike IAS and IPS, the Forest Service examination requires a science-based educational background. Candidates generally need qualifications such as a B.Sc. or B.Tech, while graduates from non-science streams are not eligible.

Preparing While Working A Full-Time Job

One of the most inspiring aspects of Sachin’s journey is that he prepared for the examination while working as an Assistant Audit Officer through SSC CGL.

Balancing work and studies was not easy. He often utilized travel time in local trains and public transport for learning and revision. Support from his family also played an important role, allowing him to focus more effectively on his preparation.

His story proves that limited time is not necessarily a limitation when it is managed wisely.

The Power of Revision and Notes

According to Sachin, one of the biggest mistakes aspirants make is focusing only on understanding concepts while neglecting revision.

He emphasized:

  • Maintain concise and organized notes.
  • Revise repeatedly.
  • Practice writing answers regularly.
  • Follow a structured approach in answers with an introduction, body, and conclusion.

He believes revision is just as important as understanding concepts because success ultimately depends on what a candidate can reproduce in the examination hall.

Learning From Failure

Sachin cleared the mains examination in his first attempt but missed the interview stage by only a few marks.

Instead of giving up, he analyzed his shortcomings, improved his preparation strategy, and returned stronger in his second attempt. The result was an outstanding AIR 56 in the Indian Forest Service Examination.

His journey highlights the importance of persistence and continuous improvement.

Interview Preparation: Honesty Matters

Sachin’s interview score was among the highest in the country.

His preparation included:

  • Mirror practice
  • Group discussions with fellow aspirants
  • Mock interview sessions
  • Using AI tools such as ChatGPT and Gemini to generate possible interview questions

However, he believes the most important factor was honesty.

Whenever he did not know an answer, he openly admitted it rather than attempting to mislead the interview panel. According to him, authenticity and self-awareness leave a stronger impression than pretending to know everything.

A Message For Punjab’s Youth

Sachin expressed concern about the low participation of Punjab’s youth in national-level competitive examinations.

He encouraged students to explore opportunities such as the Indian Forest Service, particularly because environmental conservation is becoming increasingly important for the future of India.

He believes young people from Punjab have the talent and potential to succeed, but need greater awareness and determination.

Final Thoughts

The journey of Sachin Dutt demonstrates that extraordinary achievements are possible through consistency, discipline, and perseverance.

From studying during daily commutes to overcoming setbacks and ultimately securing AIR 56, his story serves as a powerful reminder that success is earned through sustained effort.

As Sachin advises aspiring candidates: work harder than people expect, stay committed to your goals, and never underestimate the power of preparation. When effort becomes exceptional, the results often become exceptional too.
